John Rylands Library
This magnificent neo-gothic library on Deansgate is world-renowned for housing some of the most significant books & manuscripts ever produced such as: the Manchester Fragment, medieval illuminated manuscripts & the Gutenberg Bible.
Manchester was the site of the Roman Fort Mamucium in AD 79 but a town wasn’t built until the 1200s. Early evidence of its political radicalism was its support for Parliament during the Civil War in 1745. It wasn’t until the start of the Industrial Revolution that this small Medieval town would build its fortune. Manc is a very mixed city of many races & religions with a long history of being tolerant, liberal & gay-friendly. It’s known as the north’s music capital & a vibrant university town & arguably rivals London for nightlife excitement. It also continues to lead the way in urban regeneration, with eye-catching modern buildings. Mancunians are proud of their status as style icons & the city has a reputation as a great place to shop, drink & eat.
