Napoleon's Tomb at Les Invalides
Under Les Invalides' golden dome rests the tomb of Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. Arguably the best military commander of all time, his laurels can be seen all over Parisian streets and the effects of his Napoleonic Code, worldwide.
Paris, the capital of France, is situated on the River Seine, in northern France, at the heart of the Île-de-France region (Région parisienne). The earliest signs of permanent habitation in the Paris area date from around 4200 BC. Known boatsmen and traders, a sub-tribe of the celtic Senones, the Parisii, settled the area near the river Seine from around 250 BC. 'Modern' Paris is the result of a vast mid-19th-century urban remodelling. For centuries it had been a labyrinth of narrow streets and half-timber houses, but beginning in 1852, the Baron Haussmann's vast urbanisation levelled entire quarters to make way for wide avenues lined with neo-classical stone buildings of bourgeoise standing; most of this 'new' Paris is what we see today.
