Rome
"The Eternal City" The Colosseum
The Colosseum is Rome's most famous landmark. It hosted over 450 years of gladiatorial contests and hunts of exotic beasts from all over the empire. The once marble exterior was decorated with Iconic, Doric and Corinthian columns.
The Vatican
The Vatican is the Papal state situated within the city of Rome and head of the Catholic Church. Off the Piazza di San Pietro is St Peter's Basilica and the must-see Musei Vaticani containing Michelangelo's breathtaking Sistine Chapel.
The Spanish Steps
The Spanish Steps in the sublime Piazza di Spagna with its peculiar Barcaccia (Old Boat) fountain and imposing Chiesa di Trinità dei Monti looming overhead is famous as a meeting point, for people-watching and the great city views at top.
Fontana di Trevi
Fontana di Trevi is the ornate baroque fountain of Neptune that at night seems almost magical. The legend says that throwing a coin into the fountain with your right hand over your left shoulder will guarantee your return to Rome one day.
Villa d'Este
Villa d'Este in Tivoli is one of the world's finest examples of refined Renaissance culture and served as a model for the evolution of European gardens. The many cyprus, statues, waterfalls, fountains and spectacular gardens captivate the beholden.
Situated on the River Tiber, between the Apennine Mountains and the Tyrrhenian Sea, the 'Eternal City' was once the administrative center of the mighty Roman Empire, governing a vast region that stretched all the way from Britain to Mesopotamia. Today it remains the seat of the Italian government and home to numerous ministerial offices.
The quote 'Rome wasn't built in a day' couldn't be more evident on a visit, as there are so many sights to see: from the temples, homes, basilicas, churches, palazzi, piazzi, parks, museums, fountains and the Vatican too! It is best to visit them by area or neighborhood and spend at least 5 days or so in the city to truly experience the lifestyle of Romans and explore its richly layered history.
