The FIFA Women’s World Cup (aka WWC or Women’s World Cup) is an international soccer competition for women's national soccer teams held every 4 years for all FIFA member nations worldwide at a designated host nation(s).
The inaugural FIFA WWC tournament was hosted by China in 1991. The 1999 & 2003 Women's World Cups were both held in the USA. The 1999 WWC Final in California attendance of 90,185, was a world record for a women's sporting event.
The current WWC format involves 16 teams competing over a period of about 3 weeks. The winners of the 4 quarterfinal games move on to the 2 semifinal matches, which determine the Final match contestants. The losing semifinalists play for 3rd place.
